The setting that Maps uses for Home
Google’s current instructions place Home address in your Google Account under Personal info. This is a private saved address that can personalize directions, nearby results, and other Google experiences. It is not the same thing as publicly changing a street address or pin on the map.
Older instructions often start with Saved → Labeled → Home in Maps. That is no longer a safe universal route: Google’s retired Maps Help page now sends readers to Google Account address management. Use the account setting below, then treat an ordinary private place label as a separate item.
Change Home on a computer
- Open your Google Account and confirm the profile photo or initial belongs to the account you use in Maps.
- Select Personal info.
- Under Addresses, select Home address.
- Enter the new address and select Save.
- Open Google Maps with that same account and search for Home to test the destination.
If Maps is open in another tab, reload it before testing. A second signed-in account can have a different Home value, so do not skip the account check.
Change Home on Android
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Tap Google.
- Tap your profile photo or Your profile, then Manage your Google Account.
- Open Personal info.
- Under Addresses, tap Home address.
- Enter the new address and tap Save.
- Open Maps under the same account and search for Home.
Android manufacturers can word the profile step differently. The destination that matters is Personal info → Home address in the intended Google Account—not a phone contact, a Maps list, or a public pin.
Change Home on iPhone or iPad
- Open myaccount.google.com in a browser.
- If necessary, use the profile photo or initial to switch to the account used in Maps.
- Choose Manage your Google Account, then Personal info.
- Under Addresses, choose Home address.
- Enter the new address and choose Save.
- Return to Maps under that same account and search for Home.
This is a Google Account setting, not an Apple contact-card or iOS location setting. Changing an address in Contacts will not by itself change Google Account Home.
Remove Home instead of replacing it
Open the same Personal info → Home address setting and choose Remove. Removing Home stops that saved field from being used as your Account Home. It does not erase a public mailing address, delete a private label, clear past searches, rewrite Timeline, or change a Google Home device address.
Work is a separate field. If you moved both places, inspect Work address separately rather than assuming a Home edit changed it.
Which address are you changing?
Start with the place where the address appears. That prevents a private settings job from becoming an accidental public map edit.
| Where it appears | What it controls | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Home in Maps directions or Search | Private Google Account Home used across Google products | Edit Personal info → Home address, then test Home in the same account. |
| Work in Maps | Private Google Account Work | Edit Work address separately. |
| Other, profile, billing, or legal address | Separate account or payment records; profile addresses can be visible to others | Open the specifically named address record instead of changing Home. |
| A name you added to one place | A private Maps place label | Open Saved or You → Labeled, then edit or remove that label. |
| Wrong address or pin for everyone | Public Google Maps data | Use the public wrong-address or pin correction only if the shared map itself is wrong. |
| An old search or direction suggestion | Maps or Search Services history | Delete the relevant history item; do not erase unrelated activity first. |
| A past visit or route | Google Maps Timeline on a signed-in device | Edit or remove that Timeline entry in the mobile Maps app. |
| Weather or local answers from a speaker/display | The selected Google Home household/device address | Change that home’s address in the Google Home app. |
| The blue dot | Your device or browser’s estimated current location | Use Maps location-accuracy and permission checks; Home does not move the blue dot. |
| A business listing | A public Google Business Profile | An authorized manager should edit the Business Profile’s location. |
| A saved place, list, trip, shortcut, or widget | A separate saved object or launch destination | Edit or remove that item itself. |
Test the change without sharing it
After saving, use this short check:
- Confirm the profile photo or initial in Maps matches the account you edited.
- Search the single word Home in Maps.
- Check the destination text and route preview before starting navigation.
- Repeat on another device only after confirming that device is using the same account.
- If the new Home works, note exactly where the old address still appears. That location identifies the next control.
If Home will be a trip endpoint where service may be weak, verify it here first, then download the complete driving area for offline use on the device you will carry.
Do not expect every surface to refresh at a fixed time. Reopening Maps can refresh the screen, but it cannot rewrite history, Timeline, a custom label, a widget, public map data, or a device household address. Diagnose the remaining surface instead of repeatedly resaving Home.
Why the old address still appears
An old value usually survives because the screen is showing something other than Account Home. The words around it matter: recent, labeled, visited, current location, home settings, and business point to different records.
Fix the old address where it appears
| Problem | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Home still routes to the old place | Profile photo or initial, then the Home field in that account | Switch to the intended account or save Home there, then search Home again. |
| The typed new address routes to the wrong pin | Whether the error is visible when signed out or to other people | Use Google’s public wrong-address or pin workflow; do not change private Home to repair public map data. |
| An old address appears as a suggestion | Maps history or the current Search Services History setting | Remove the specific activity item. Labels and Timeline will remain separate. |
| An old named marker remains on your map | Saved or You → Labeled | Edit or delete the private label. |
| A past visit shows the old home | Your Timeline on the device that recorded it | Edit or remove that visit in the mobile Maps app; changing Home does not rewrite a past visit. |
| A speaker gives local results for the old place | The selected home in the Google Home app | Open Home settings → home name → Home address and change the device-home address. |
| The blue dot is at the wrong place | Location permission, accuracy circle, connectivity, and device settings | Follow Google’s location-accuracy checks; Account Home is not the blue dot. |
| A business still shows its former address | Whether you are an authorized Business Profile manager | Use the Business Profile location editor; otherwise suggest an appropriate public edit. |
| A custom widget or shortcut goes to the old place | The destination stored in that widget or shortcut | Remove and recreate or edit that saved object with the intended destination. |
| Another account or device differs | The account shown on each device | Do not assume a device is using the same account; verify before making another change. |
| The screen still looks unchanged | Whether you reloaded Maps after saving | Reload or reopen once, then identify the surface. Do not clear all data as a first step. |
| A public edit was accepted but is not visible | The edit status, not the private Home field | An approved public edit may not appear on the map immediately; check its status separately from the private Home field. |
Keep private labels and public pins separate
A private label is a personal name attached to a place. Only you can see it, although it can appear in your Maps suggestions, Google Photos, and Saved area. Edit or remove it under Saved or You → Labeled.
If you are deciding where to keep an ordinary place rather than changing Account Home, use the labels, lists, and Starred places comparison before creating another address-like record.
A public address or pin correction changes shared map data. Google describes these updates as publicly available and reviews suggested edits. Use that workflow only when the address or pin is wrong for map users generally—not when your private Home destination alone is stale.
If other people reach the wrong house or arrival street too, use the public address, entrance and road checks to choose the appropriate report.
Maps history is not Timeline
Maps history can include searches, directions, and places you viewed. During Google’s current settings rollout, the control may be called Search Services History. Delete a relevant item if the old address appears as prior activity or a suggestion. Deleting Maps history does not remove Timeline visits, saved lists, or labels.
Timeline is an opt-in record of visits and routes saved from signed-in devices. It is managed in the mobile Maps app; Timeline is not available in Maps on a computer. If the old address is a past visit, edit that visit rather than changing Account Home again. If it appears only as a search or viewed place, use the separate Maps search-history controls instead of changing Account Home twice.
Google Home, the blue dot, and businesses use other controls
The physical address for Google Home or Nest devices can differ from Account Home. In the Google Home app, verify the account and selected home, then open Home settings → home name → Home address. Google says this change affects devices in the selected home.
The blue dot is Maps’ estimate of the device or browser’s current location. Its accuracy depends on location signals and permissions, not on the saved Home destination. A light-blue circle around the dot indicates uncertainty.
A Business Profile address is public business information. An authorized manager changes it through Edit profile → Location; a move can involve Google’s review or verification. Do not use a personal Home field to manage a business listing.
What does “private Home” mean?
Google says only you can access your Google Account Home and Work addresses. Saving Home does not publish a house label to everyone on Maps. It can still be used to personalize Google products—for example, nearby results or directions—and Google’s location documentation says the exact address may be used for Search when Google estimates that you are at Home.
Removing Account Home does not remove a real-world mailing address from the public map or from other account records. Review profile, billing, legal, and Other addresses separately if one of those is the value you intend to change. Avoid taking or sharing screenshots that expose the address, account photo, email, or route to a residence.
A short safe checklist
- Confirm the Google Account before opening the address field.
- Change or remove Personal info → Home address.
- Search Home in Maps and inspect the route preview.
- Name the exact screen where any old address remains.
- Use a private label, history, Timeline, Google Home, location-accuracy, public-map, Business Profile, or saved-object workflow only when that is the surface you found.
- Never submit a public edit merely to change a private Home destination.
Sources and update note
Google’s current computer, Android, and iPhone/iPad address instructions were reviewed on September 10, 2026. The former Maps Help article for setting Home and Work now redirects to Google Account address management. Interface labels can vary during Google’s current Search Services History rollout, so follow the destination setting described here when a nearby label differs.
