Google Maps history

How to View and Delete Google Maps Search History

Open Google Maps and confirm the Google Account first. On a computer, choose Menu → Maps history. On Android, iPhone, or iPad, tap your profile photo or initial → Your data in Maps → Search Services History. Remove one item, today, a custom range, or all time—but check the product filter before a broad deletion. Maps-history deletion does not delete Timeline visits, saved places, private labels, reviews, photos, or browser history. If your account still shows Web & App Activity, use that legacy control instead. Turning history off stops applicable future saving; it does not erase past activity unless you choose the separate delete option.

Maps activity is one drawer. Deleting from it does not empty Timeline, Saved places, contributions, or browser history.

Identify what is still showing

“Maps history” is broader than typed search terms. Google says it can include Maps searches, directions requests, places you viewed, place links you shared, calls started from Maps, and Ask Maps conversations. But several records that appear around Maps live somewhere else.

Six separate records: Maps history, Timeline, saved places and labels, contributions, browser or device history, and signed-out activity. Deleting one record leaves the others.
Start with the record, not the delete button. Each drawer has its own controls.

If the contribution itself is missing, follow the Google Maps review visibility checks before deleting unrelated activity. If the screen fails to load instead, use the checks for reviews that will not open before resetting anything.

Confirm the account and deletion scope

Look at the profile photo or initial before opening history. A shared device may be using a different account than you expect, and some Google activity is saved to the default account when several accounts are signed in.

Then check the activity filter and date range. The newer Search Services History setting covers activity across Google Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News. If you intend to remove only Maps activity, keep the product or service filter narrowed to Maps instead of assuming every item on the page belongs to Maps.

View Maps history on a computer

Google’s current documented desktop path is:

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Choose Menu → Maps history.
  3. Check the account shown on the activity page.
  4. Review the product filter and date before selecting an item or Delete.

You can remove one entry or use the Delete menu for Today, a custom range, or all time. If the account has not received the newer Search Services controls, the page may refer to Web & App Activity instead.

View Maps history on Android

Google documents this Android route:

  1. Open the current Google Maps app.
  2. Tap your profile photo or initial.
  3. Choose Your data in Maps.
  4. Open Search Services History.
  5. Check the account and filters, then remove one entry or use Delete for the intended time span.

Labels can arrive gradually with account rollouts. Update Maps and use the label your account actually displays rather than switching accounts just to find a newer screen.

View Maps history on iPhone or iPad

On iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap the profile photo or initial.
  3. Select Your data in Maps.
  4. Open Search Services History.
  5. Verify the account and filters before removing an item or opening Delete.

Deleting Google Account activity is separate from clearing Safari or another browser’s history. If a Maps page remains in the browser’s visited-page list, manage that local record in the browser.

Delete one item, today, a range, or all time

Choose the smallest scope that solves the problem.

Delete only after confirming the account and scope. Google says deletion begins a process that removes the activity from view and then from its systems; limited information can be kept longer for specific business or legal purposes. Google’s Maps Help does not promise casual recovery, so treat confirmation as consequential.

Remove history for one place

If one fictional museum or library is the problem, do not clear a month of unrelated activity.

  • On a computer, open the place overview, find Your Maps history, then choose Delete beside the relevant recent activity.
  • On Android, iPhone, or iPad, open the place and choose Your visits and Maps history, then delete the relevant entry under recent Maps history.

A Timeline visit to the same place is separate. Removing place-specific Maps history does not remove the physical visit recorded in Timeline.

Delete an Ask Maps conversation

Where Ask Maps is available, Google documents a conversation history. On a computer, open Menu → Ask Maps → History. On Android or iPhone/iPad, open Ask Maps beneath the search bar, then choose History.

Select Delete beside the conversation. Current Help says this removes the complete conversation, not one message inside it. Deleting an ordinary Maps search elsewhere does not necessarily remove that Ask Maps conversation.

For asking place questions, checking availability, and verifying a suggested venue, use the separate Ask Maps usage guide. This page remains the account-history and deletion procedure.

Check these things before a broad deletion

  1. Account: confirm the profile photo or initial.
  2. Product: narrow the activity to Maps if that is the intended scope.
  3. Dates: reread Today, custom range, or all time.
  4. Record type: decide whether the item is history, Timeline, Saved, a label, a contribution, or browser history.
  5. Ask Maps: delete only the complete conversation you intend to remove.
  6. Future saving: decide separately whether saving should remain on.
  7. Auto-delete: note the period the account currently displays.
  8. Copy: if a personal record is genuinely needed, review Google Takeout before deletion; an export is not a promise that Maps can restore deleted activity.

Search Services History or Web & App Activity?

Google is gradually rolling out Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations in Search services as replacements for parts of the older Web & App Activity and Search Personalization model.

  • If the account shows Search Services History, use that setting. It is cross-service, not Maps-only.
  • If the account still shows Web & App Activity, open Google Account → Data & privacy → History settings → Web & App Activity and follow that legacy branch.
  • If a school or work account hides a control, update the app, confirm the account, and ask the administrator whether the service is available. Do not bypass organizational policy.

Clearing cache or reinstalling an app does not force an account into the newer rollout. Migrated settings follow relevant previous choices; check the setting shown in your account.

Turn future saving off without deleting the past

For an account with the newer controls, open Search Services History and choose Turn off. This stops applicable future activity from being saved to that setting across supported Search services. It is broader than a Maps-only switch.

Past activity stays until it is manually deleted or reaches the account’s auto-delete limit. Turn off and delete activity is a separate choice that both changes future saving and begins a destructive deletion flow. Read the final scope before confirming it.

Six choices have different effects: delete one item or today, delete a custom range or all time, turn future saving off, turn off and begin deletion, auto-delete as activity ages, or use Maps Incognito for one mobile session.
Delete changes retained activity. Turn off changes future saving. Auto-delete and Incognito solve different jobs.

Use auto-delete without guessing the period

Auto-delete removes activity after the retention period selected in the account while allowing newer applicable activity to remain. Open the history controls, inspect the exact option shown, and confirm the setting there.

Use the retention periods offered in your account rather than values listed on older help pages. You can also delete individual items or a date range manually.

Personalized Recommendations is a separate setting

Turning Personalized Recommendations in Search services off changes how saved activity and preferences are used to tailor supported Search services. It does not delete Search Services History.

Current context can still affect results, and saved items plus Home or Work can still surface. Past searches can also remain in Autocomplete while history saving remains on. If an old address is the actual problem, follow the separate steps to change Home or manage its remaining surface instead of repeatedly deleting Maps history.

Timeline visits and routes remain separate

Maps-history deletion does not delete Timeline. Timeline records eligible visits and routes and now uses a device-based model; Maps history covers interactions such as searches, directions requests, and viewed places.

If a physical visit or route remains, use the Timeline privacy guide to identify the current device and choose stop-only, selected deletion, or all-data deletion. Do not clear more Maps history in the hope that a separate Timeline visit will disappear.

If the concern is who can see the device now, Maps history is still the wrong surface. Follow the consent-first Location Sharing workflow to verify the account and device, then stop and audit active shares.

Saved places, labels, and contributions remain

Deleting Maps history does not remove saved lists, private labels, reviews, photos, edits, or feedback. Remove each item where it lives:

  • open Saved for lists and saved places;
  • edit Home, Work, or a private label in its address or label controls;
  • manage reviews, photos, edits, and feedback through contributions.

If the puzzle is where a place was saved rather than how to delete activity, the label, saved list, Starred, and Home/Work decision guide traces the correct container first.

These distinctions also matter in class. The Google Maps teacher workflow keeps personal history and saved-account details out of lesson data, while the mapping-research privacy checklist helps learners separate shared work from private records.

Browser, device, and signed-out history can remain

Account activity is not the same as browser history. A browser can still list a Maps page you visited even after the account activity is deleted. A device can also retain recent searches, and signed-out Search customization has separate controls.

Clear only the relevant browser or device record. If an action was performed while offline, the account view may update after the device reconnects and synchronizes. If several accounts were open, repeat the account check before assuming deletion failed.

Use Maps Incognito for one mobile session

On Android or iPhone/iPad, Maps Incognito prevents that Maps session from saving browsing or search history to the account, updating Timeline on the device, or personalizing Maps from account activity. Turn it on from the profile menu when that limited session behavior fits the job.

It is not global anonymity. Internet providers, other apps, voice assistants, and other Google services can have separate records or controls. Offline Maps is also unavailable while Maps Incognito is active, so leave it off when you need a downloaded area.

Verify the result on the intended surface

After the account activity page finishes updating:

  1. Reopen Maps history with the intended account.
  2. Confirm the item, day, or range is absent under the Maps filter.
  3. Recheck the future-saving control only if you changed it.
  4. Confirm the displayed auto-delete choice only if you changed retention.
  5. If something remains, identify whether it is Timeline, Saved, a label, a contribution, browser history, device history, or signed-out customization.
  6. Do not repeat a broad deletion against the wrong surface.

Keep private history out of shared work

Do not expose a real search, route, home address, account screen, or Timeline to troubleshoot in front of a class. Use a fictional place such as “museum” when demonstrating the difference between a search entry and a saved item. Managed school and work accounts can offer different controls; follow the administrator’s policy instead of moving personal history into a school workflow.
