What is Ask Maps for?
Ask Maps uses Gemini in Google Maps to answer conversational questions about places. Instead of searching one business name, you might describe an area, a time, and several preferences. You can then ask a follow-up in the same conversation. Google says results may draw on Maps place information, reviews, your location, and—depending on your settings—past activity or saved places. Treat that as a way to discover candidates, not as independent confirmation that a place meets every condition. Google’s Ask Maps Help warns that AI-powered answers can be incorrect.
Once you choose a place, ordinary Maps tools still do their own jobs: open its listing, get directions, save it to a list, or use a supported reservation or third-party action where offered. Ask Maps is not the same as Immersive Navigation’s active-driving display. Neither replaces the current route, schedule, or place details you need to check before leaving. For the wider set of everyday tools, see eight useful Google Maps features.
Where can I find it, and what is available?
As of October 22, 2026, computer Help documents Ask Maps on the web; the March introduction began with Android and iOS in the U.S. and India, and the August expansion widened the English rollout. Check the current instructions for your device; an older mobile-only launch guide does not describe every supported surface today.
| Surface or capability | What Google documents | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Android | In the Maps app, tap Ask Maps below the search bar, then type or use the microphone. | If the control is missing, check your account, app version, and current rollout availability. |
| iPhone or iPad | In the Maps app, tap Ask Maps below the search bar, then enter or speak a question. | An individual app/account may not yet show it. |
| Computer | Open Google Maps, then Menu → Ask Maps; enter a question and send it. | Google's Help says Ask Maps needs WebGL; browser settings can interfere. |
| Base rollout | The August announcement names Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico, plus more than 150 countries and territories in English. | “Rolling out” does not mean every account has it. |
| Language and transit | Google announced Hindi rollout in India and a live transit widget wherever Ask Maps is available. | Language, local transit data, and the widget's rollout are distinct from base access. |
| Personal Intelligence | Eligible adults with personal accounts can choose connected-app personalization in specified countries and languages. | Its country/language list is narrower than the base rollout; Gmail connection is optional and off by default. |
| Third-party actions | Google's current food-order action Help covers signed-in adults in the U.S., in English, on mobile or web. | Partner, device, and location availability vary; checkout and payment happen with the selected third party. |
For a visible button, follow the platform’s current Android, iPhone/iPad, or computer Help: open Ask Maps, type a question or use the offered microphone, and send it. Ask one follow-up before starting a new search when the first answer is close. On a computer, check WebGL if the documented web interface fails to run. The initial U.S./India rollout and India’s later Hindi update explain why an old availability article may disagree with current Help.
Why might Ask Maps be missing?
Check what is missing before changing settings. A missing button, a browser that cannot run Ask Maps, and an unavailable ordering action need different checks. For a country-by-country view of Ask Maps and Google’s other new Maps features, see where new Google Maps features work.
| What you see | Check first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No button on Android, iPhone or iPad | Look below the Maps search bar. | Check the current app, country, language and account availability. An app update cannot guarantee access. |
| No button on a computer | Open Menu → Ask Maps, rather than looking only below the search box. | Use Google's computer Help; desktop is a documented surface. |
| Ask Maps appears but will not run on the web | Google says WebGL is required. | Use the browser-support check linked from Google's Ask Maps Help. |
| Ask Maps works, but food ordering is missing | Ordering has separate U.S., English, signed-in and 18+ requirements. | Check the partner, location and device limits in Google's third-party action Help. |
| An earlier conversation is missing | Open Ask Maps → History in the account you used. | Check whether history was being saved; do not assume every past conversation can be restored. |
Use the platform Help links above for the current instructions. If your school or work manages the account, ask its administrator about restrictions. Connecting Gmail, reinstalling, clearing data or changing a VPN is not a documented way to force access. For an answer that appears but is wrong, use Thumbs-down → reason → feedback below the response.
How do I ask a useful place question?
Build the question from five parts: area, time, preferences, constraints, and a follow-up. The area anchors the map. Time filters out irrelevant suggestions. Preferences explain what “good” means to you. Constraints name requirements worth checking. A follow-up narrows the same conversation instead of making you start over. If one preference is non-negotiable—such as step-free access—say so, but still verify the listing or contact the venue.
Fictional example place questions:
- “Find a café.” This leaves the area, time, and need unstated.
- “Find a quiet café near the station that is open after 6 p.m. and has outdoor seating.” This adds area, time, preference, and two checkable constraints.
- “Which of those is easiest to reach on foot from the north entrance?” This follows up on the candidates. Open the actual route and place listing before choosing.
If the result is vague, specify what can actually be checked: a neighborhood rather than “nearby,” a time window rather than “later,” or walking versus driving. Ask Maps may still omit a good candidate. Compare the underlying listings rather than treating the first few suggestions as an exhaustive or neutral directory.
For the separate car-display question, see Gemini in Google Maps on CarPlay.
When should I use another Maps tool instead?
These are starting points, not rigid product boundaries. Ask Maps helps with a fuzzy, multi-constraint discovery problem; the other controls often finish the job more directly.
| Reader task | Better starting point | Why | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find a known address or business | Ordinary Maps search | Search directly for the known name or address. | A listing still needs current-detail checks. |
| Discover a place with several preferences | Ask Maps | Describe the combined needs in one question. | Availability and answer quality vary. |
| Narrow the candidates | Ask Maps follow-up | Keep the same conversation and clarify a constraint. | Recheck the candidate's listing and route. |
| Travel to the chosen place | Directions | Compare supported travel modes and route details. | Traffic, service, and access conditions can change. |
| Keep or share candidates | Saved list | Collect the chosen places after checking permissions. | List visibility and editor rights need review. |
| Draw layers or import a class dataset | Google My Maps | Build a separate custom-map project. | It is not turn-by-turn navigation. |
For list permissions and Starred places, use the saved-place decision guide. For layered projects and when to use Earth, see Maps versus My Maps versus Earth.
What should I verify before acting on an answer?
Open the suggested place in Maps instead of relying on the generated summary. Check the listing’s current hours and temporary-closure notice; whether booking or a ticket is required; price, menu, or entry details; parking and transit options; stated accessibility; and any amenity your plan depends on. For a consequential visit, confirm with the venue’s own current site or directly with its staff. Use the route view for the chosen travel mode and departure time. A static review, photo, or place description may predate a change.
For road preferences, see avoid tolls and highways.
Google’s Ask Maps guidance says to double-check important information and provide feedback when an answer is wrong. Do not use Ask Maps alone for an emergency, an access-critical appointment, or a claim that parking or seating is currently free.
What does Ask Maps know or remember?
There is no single Ask Maps privacy switch that erases every related Maps record. Google’s AI-powered data Help says responses may use location and, when relevant personalization settings are enabled, account activity such as Maps searches, past Ask Maps conversations, saved lists or labels, reviews, and Search history. Ask Maps answers can be stored and could include location. Review the account and settings actually shown before putting private details in a question.
Ask Maps has its own conversation-history view. Google’s platform Help shows a History control within Ask Maps and says its Delete action removes a whole conversation, not one message. Whether an account saves or resumes earlier conversations also depends on relevant history settings. The broader Maps history / Search Services History control can cover searches, directions, viewed places, and related activity; some accounts still show Web & App Activity while settings roll out. Do not assume deleting one ordinary search removes an Ask Maps conversation. For account checks, filtering, deletion, and turning history off, follow the Maps search-history guide.
Saved places and labels are a separate collection. Timeline concerns visits and routes; Location Sharing concerns a live share with another person. Deleting an Ask Maps conversation does not itself delete those records or stop a share.
You can use Ask Maps without connecting Gmail. Optional Personal Intelligence / connected-app personalization lets eligible adults with a personal Google Account connect Gmail in supported countries and languages, with Personalized Recommendations enabled. Google’s connected-content Help currently lists Gmail for Ask Maps; its broader Search settings also describe other apps, so check the Ask Maps section. The August announcement says Gmail connection is off by default.
Disconnecting a content app does not delete information already saved in Search Services History. Review that history separately if you want to remove it. Google’s connected-content Help also explains how interactions using connected content may be used to improve its services; read that explanation before choosing to connect.
What are the practical limits?
Ask Maps can suggest candidates and summarize place information; it cannot by itself guarantee today’s hours, a free parking space, a reservation, step-free access, an exhaustive set of places, or a safe route. The August transit announcement describes a live widget rolling out where Ask Maps is available, but that does not make every local schedule complete or replace an operator alert. Third-party action Help says a selected partner handles checkout, payment, order status, and problems; read that partner’s terms before authorizing data sharing. Choose the specific tool and current source that match the consequence of your decision.
